Sri Lankan Girls

Their father, a Tamil Tiger guerilla was killed in 2009 in just of one of the clashes between the government and LTTE.  The orphaned girls are being raised by their grandfather in Delft Island in the Palk Straight of Northern Sri Lanka.

The grandfather owns an empty store save for some chewy palmyra palms. It tastes like bland sweet potato and are tough to chew. He sold us some overpriced fresh coconuts that even our tuktuk driver said it was expensive. I just shrugged. Delft Island was once the center of ancient Tamil kingdom and later on becoming a Dutch fort, it is one of the poorest places in Sri Lanka. Only remnants of a once great civilization are left of this abandoned island.
